Dual Language
James Bonham Academy offers a two-way dual language program. There are many benefits associated with this additive method of instruction. Benefits include high levels of oral language proficiency and literacy in both English and Spanish, increased academic achievement in all subject areas, cultivation of an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and development of positive attitudes toward fellow students, their families and the community. Research shows that students participating in dual language perform above the norm on standardized tests after several years in the program.

Bonham Academy offers music, dance, theatre arts and visual arts to its students. These programs are funded by the San Antonio Independent School District and by ArtSmart
Through participation in Ballet Folclórico, students will be introduced to the culture, customs and traditions of Mexico; will learn about the exquisite beauty of dance from different regions that speaks to the richness of Mexican folklore; will have the opportunity to perform basic to advanced folk dance steps; and will discover fun ways to have a physically active lifestyle. Practices will take place during Physical Education classes on Wednesdays for the entire school year.
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
King William Association: The King William Association has been a central supporter of ArtSmart for many years! “The King William Association (KWA) was founded in 1967 as a voluntary neighborhood group designed to address urban and neighborhood issues, communicate ideas to city officials, and provide information to residents and visitors. The association has over 850 members, including property owners and renters, as well as neighborhood businesses and institutions. KWA is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the active membership in September of each year.” To continue reading and find out more, visit the KWA website.
Friends of Bonham: The Friends of Bonham (FOB) is an independent non-profit organization (501c3) established to support Bonham Academy. The Friends bring together neighborhood, business, arts and philanthropic community partners to support the pillars of the Bonham charter: language arts, environmental sciences, and fine arts. Since its founding in 2009, FOB has raised funds to support guided reading textbooks in English and Spanish, Springboard English Interactive Student Textbooks materials for the Middle School, Chinese instruction, curriculum training sessions, computers, participation in the Alamo Regional Science Fair, Class trips to the Capitol and art programs. In the 2010-2011 school year, the Friends brokered the Pace Foundation donation of a playscape valued at nearly $40,000 to the district and raised funds to move it to the campus. Amigos de Bonham/Friends of Bonham (Organización Comunitaria)
Los Amigos de Bonham/Friends of Bonham (FOB) es una organización independiente sin fines de lucro (501c3) establecida para apoyar a Bonham Academy. Los amigos reúnen a la comunidad, negocios, socios de la comunidad artística y filantrópica para apoyar los pilares de la carta de Bonham: artes de lenguaje, ciencias ambientales y las bellas artes. Desde su fundación en el 2009, FOB ha reunido fondos para apoyar la compra de textos de lectura en Inglés y Español, materiales de Springboard para la escuela secundaria, enseñanza de Chino, sesiones de entrenamiento en currículo, computadoras, participación en la Feria de Ciencia Regional del Alamo, viajes de clases al Capitolio y programas de arte. En el año 2010-2011, los amigos lograron que la Fundación Pace donara equipo de juegos al distrito y recabó fondos para traerlo al campus de Bonham.

Chess Club (Grades 2-8)

The Bonham Chess Club invites students to join us for our third year of fun and games. Students in grades 2 – 8 are welcome to join Chess Club to learn the game or improve their skills. Chess is a great way to build analytic skills and learn spatial reasoning, focus, strategic thinking, and problem-solving. We will meet (approximately) two Fridays a month from 3:30 to 4:30.
For students who are new to Chess Club and do not know how to play chess: You will be required to attend Chess Boot Camp prior to our first meeting. The purpose of Boot Camp is to give students an intensive introduction to the basics of chess. Boot Camp will be free and fun, and it is a requirement for all beginning students. (Chess basics will not be taught at the regular Friday meetings.) Dates for Boot Camp as well as our regular meetings will be sent home with students.
Ajedrez (Grados 2-8)
El Club de Ajedrez de Bonham invita a que los estudiantes se unan para nuestro tercer año de juegos y diversion. Los estudiantes en grados 2 – 8 son bienvenidos al Club de Ajedrez para aprender el juego o mejorar sus destrezas. El ajedrez es una gran manera de desarrollar destrezas analíticas y aprender razonamiento espacial, enfoque, pensamiento estratégico y resolución de problemas. Nos reuniremos (aproximadamente) dos viernes al mes de 3:30 a 4:30. Para los estudiantes que son nuevos al Club de Ajedrez y que no saben cómo jugar: Tendrán que ir al Campo de Entrenamiento antes de nuestra primer reunión. El propósito del Campo de Entrenamiento es dar una introducción intensiva de las reglas básicas del ajedrez. El Campo de Entrenamiento será gratis y divertido, y es requisito para todos los estudiantes principiantes. (Las reglas básicas de ajedrez no se enseñarán en las reuniones regulares de los viernes.) Las fechas para el Campo de Entrenamiento y para nuestras reuniones generales se mandarán a casa con los estudiantes.

Cub Scouts is for boys in the first through fifth grades, or 7-10 years of age. Boys who are older than 10 or who have completed the fifth grade, can no longer join Cub Scouting, but they may be eligible to join the Boy Scouting or Venturing program.

Cub Scouts(Grados 1-5)/Boy Scouts (Niños mayores de 10 años)
Cub Scouts es para niños de primero a quinto año, o de 7-10 años de edas. Para tener un grupo de Cub Scout este año, un padre necesitará ser voluntario para guiarlo. All students of Bonham Academy grades K-5 are members of EarlyAct. EarlyAct is a student directed club that is focused on school, neighborhood, and world service. Officers and class representatives are selected from every K-5 room. Early Act meets at 3:30 PM on Thursdays in Ms. Islas’ classroom. The first meeting of 2015 will be on Thursday, September 24th. All students are invited to participate!

This goal of the Bonham Robotics Club is to spark an interest in science and technology using LEGO Simple Machines. The club is currently for students in kindergarten through grade 3. University Interscholastic League (UIL) (Grades 2-8)

Bonham has two UIL teams: elementary and middle school and they include children in the first through eighth grades. UIL events include: Art, Music Memory, English Oral Reading, Spanish Oral Reading, Listening Skills, Map/Graphs/Charts, Number Sense, Creative Writing, Social Studies, Chess, Spelling and Dictionary Skills. These UIL activities “are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.” To continue reading, click here. Liga Interescolástica Universitaria/University Interscholastic League (UIL) (Grados 2-8)
Bonham tiene dos equipos de UIL: primaria y secundaria e incluyen a niños del primer al octavo grados. Los eventos de UIL incluyen: Arte, Memoria Musical, Lectura Oral en Inglés, Lectura Oral en Español, Destrezas de Escuchar, Mapas/Gráficas, Sentido Numérico, Escritura Creativa, Estudios Sociales, Ajedrez, Destrezas de Deletreo y Diccionario. Yearbook Club is a wonderful way for Bonham Middle School students to show their creative side!
It is more than just creating a yearbook! It allows students to express themselves while learning to work as a team.
The staff will be responsible for certain departments, grade levels and duties. However, we are a team and share all responsibilities. They will be taught about photography, deadlines, editing, design, marketing & sales, covering school events, teamwork, communication skills and so much more.
The yearbook club is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
Club del Anuario Escolar/Yearbook Club (Grados 6-8)
El Club del Anuario Escolar es una gran manera para que los estudiantes de la secundaria de Bonham muestren su lado creativo! Es más que solo crear un anuario! Les permite expresarse mientras aprenden a trabajar en equipo. El personal se hará responsable de ciertos departamentos, grados y responsabilidades. Se les enseñará fotografía, fechas límite, edición, diseño, mercadotecnia y ventas, cómo cubrir eventos escolares, trabajo en equipo, destrezas de comunicación y muchas otras destrezas. El club del anuario está abierto para el 6to, 7mo y 8vo grados.
